Fishing Rod Design for Whiting

There are several considerations in building a rod for Whiting fishing. Length is the first - 6’ or 7’ for out of the boat. Seeker/Sabre or Calstar E-Glass have been the go to blank for Whiting due to their reliability, they are more forgiving with a lovely soft tip for sensitivity. MHX also have a carbon blank which is suitable, the SJ842-MHX but it is not as forgiving as the E glass blank, it doesn’t take kindly to high sticking it as it will break. If you’re fishing deeper water then EG196-6 or something in the Calstar range which are heavier. Most of the Whiting sticks have a longer rear grip, usually 10”-12” so it can be comfortable under your armpit. A 6” front grip is ok. If you’re using mono you can use cheaper Fuji KW & KL Fazlite ring guides, braid you would want Fuji KW,KL Alconite and upwards.

Seeker/Sabre - Use the heavier KW guides

Calstar - Use the heavier KW guides

MHX - Use the lighter KL or KT guides
